General features

Alloy 410S (UNS S41008) is a low-carbon, non-hardening improvement of ALLOY 410 (UNS S41000, martensitic stainless steel with 12% chromium)。The characteristics of low carbon and low alloying dose will reduce the formation of austenite at high temperature, which will limit the hardening ability of the alloy。Even when cooled rapidly from the critical temperature, 410S remains soft and malleable。Its non-hardening properties help prevent the alloy from hardening or cracking at high temperatures or during welding。410S has a complete ferrite structure under annealing condition。It shows good corrosion resistance and oxidation resistance similar to 410。

The corrosion resistance

Sunmire steel's 410S stainless steel has similar corrosion resistance to the 410。It is corrosion resistant to atmospheric, fresh water, mild organic and inorganic acids, bases, and some chemical conditions。Good performance can be maintained when exposed to chloride contamination during daily activities (e.g. food preparation, sporting activities, etc.) as long as proper cleaning is carried out after exposure。

As shown in the table above, 410S has good corrosion resistance in low concentrations of mild organic and inorganic acids。

The oxidation resistance

410S stainless steel has good oxidation resistance。It can be used at temperatures up to 1300°F (705°C)。Excessive deformation begins at unstable temperatures of 1500°F (811°C)。

Manufacturing data

Heat treatment

The alloy cannot be hardened by heat treatment。Annealing shall be performed at temperatures between 1600 and 1650°F (871 -- 899°C), followed by cooling of the air to relieve cold working stress。410S should not be exposed to (equal to or above) temperatures of 2000°F (1093°C) due to the occurrence of brittleness。If excessive particles appear during annealing for mild cold-worked materials, the annealing temperature should be reduced to the 1200-1350°F (649-732°C) range。

Surface treatment

It is essential for maximum corrosion resistance in chemical environments that all tempering colours or oxides formed during annealing or hot working should be removed from 410S surfaces。All surfaces must be ground or polished to remove any traces of oxide and surface decarbonization。The portion to be treated should be immersed in a warm, 10-20% nitric acid solution followed by a water wash to remove any iron residue。

410S alloy should be annealed at 60 to 80 feet per minute (18.3-24.4 m) surface speed machining。

焊接

410S is generally considered weldable by common fusion with resistance techniques。Particular consideration should be given to avoiding fragile weld breaks during manufacturing by reducing discontinuous operations, keeping welding heat inputs low and heating parts from time to time prior to forming。Compared to the most commonly used ferritic stainless steel 409,410 S is usually considered to be less weldable。The main difference is that the addition of alloy additives to control hardening will require a higher heat input during arc welding to achieve penetration。AWS E/ER 309L and 430 are the most commonly specified filler materials when welding filler is required。
